 Yasukuni Shrine Gendaito Katana Yasushige NBTHK Hozon WWII year 1940

This authentic WWII era gendaito katana, crafted by the Skillful Yasushige, is a remarkable example of the swords produced at the Yasukuni Shrine forge.
Signed and dated “A lucky day in oktober 1940,” this blade reflects the meticulous craftsmanship and spiritual significance associated with Yasukuni swords.

The blade features a beautifully executed suguha hamon in the classic Yasukunito style, with a thick nioguchi and a strong boshi showcasing an excelent turn-back on both sides. The hada displays a well-forged ko-itame grain mixed with striking activity, a testament to Yasushige’s skill in forging and tempering.
Yasushige was among the elite swordsmiths at the Yasukuni Shrine forge, known for producing swords imbued with both functional excellence and ceremonial reverence. This katana exemplifies the high standards of forging, polishing, and tempering that made Yasukuni swords prized during WWII. A collector’s piece of immense historical and artistic value, this Yasukunito katana offers a unique connection to Japanese craftsmanship and wartime heritage. Abe Yasushige Born in Meiji 44 (1911) in Yamagata. Trained under Ikeda Yasumitsu. Joined the NTK as sakite in December of Showa 8 (1933). Became a Yasukuni tosho in Showa 14 (1939). Never made another sword after the war. Yasushige, his real name Abe Shigeo, comes from Yamagata prefecture. On Showa 14 year October 4 he received the name Yasushige. At the Army Gunto Exhibition he won the President Award and has made every imperial katana and gunto. The Yasukuni sword is made at the Yasukuni shrine with the aim of making swords of high quality WWII Yasukuni Shrine Gendaito Katana by Yasushige.

Beautiful original sword, in type 98 gunto koshirae with High ranking officer colonel tassel its a wonderful piece to add to you collection and enjoy.
It has a special family Mon on the kashira of the Fujiwara Samurai clan that makes this sword very personel.
The wooden saya is original from war period and has some aging.
