Masahisa was part of the prestigious Hizen tradition. His teacher, Dohi (Doi) Shinryo Masashige, was a mid-Edo master who trained under Inoue Shinkai, one of the greatest Osaka smiths. Returning to Hizen, Shinryo became the official swordsmith of the Matsuura Samurai family in Hirado.
The Dohi Shinryo school continued through five generations, producing swords celebrated for their refined steel and superb cutting quality.
