Exceptional Japanese Samurai Sword Katana Fujishima Tomoshige (Rai School) NBTHK Hozon

It is said that the first-gen Tomoshige was an apprentice of Rai Kunitoshi, one of the most famous swordsmiths in Yamashiro province
(Today’s Kyoto) during the late Kamakura-early Nanbokucho period (Late 13th-early 14th century). And the first-gen Tomoshige settled in Kaga domain and founded the school.
This blade, was made during the Eisho era year 1565 Late Muromachi Period). Based on available records, the 7th-gen Tomoshige was active at this time.

In the late Muromachi period, Maeda clan started to control Kaga domain. Maeda clan was originally a retainer of the Oda family, who ruled Owari province.
The Maeda clan was one of the most influential families in Samurai history. The first head of the Maeda clan was Toshie Maeda.  Toshie Maeda had a close tie with Oda Nobunaga and Hideyoshi Toyotomi.
Since Tomoshige lived in this domain, he served the Maeda clan,  swords made by his hands are high class Samurai swords.
But this one is Signed Fujishima Tomoshige and wat this sword makes exceptional quality is the O kissaki  thats rare its historical value and very impressive.

The tang style of Fujishima Tomoshige’s tang style during the Koto period is a derivative of the unusual Iriyama style, and is called “Hagami Katatsuki” or “Kashu Tang”much sought after rarely found.
Blade is just
beautiful in perfect condition with a wonderful wavy hammon.
Fuchikashira nice detail of dragonfly with gold inlay eyes.
Tsuba openwork of a Dragon.
Kozuka high relief on a shakudo nanakoji.
Saya black  lacquered relief very well made in outstanding condition.
